| Akita , Japan |
Akita is the 33rd prefecture to be a subject of the European Eyes photography project. Two photographers from the 2011 European Capital of Culture host countries Finland and Estonia visited Japan to photograph the prefecture. Estonian photographer Krista Mölder visited Akita last Dec.-Jan., and Finnish photographer Kalle Kataila photographed in Akita in this Jul. Supported by people involved in the art project 0/DATE launched at their own initiative and together with the local community by artists from the Akita city of Odate, photographers visited various parts of the prefecture during their stays to photograph contemporary Japan from their personal perspectives. These photographs will be opened to public as a photograph book and photograph exhibition in Tallinn2011 and Turku2011 this year. We expect encounters with the work resulting from different, European views of the land, people and culture of Akita to produce opportunities to confront anew what we have overlooked in our daily routines.
