Plektrum brings the spirit and unusual events of the world’s great metropolises to Tallinn, presenting and examining the crossover points between modern culture, art, music and education. The international festival offers contemporary classical and electronic music concerts and parties inspired by its main theme, chances to meet some of the world’s foremost artists and thinkers, VJs and DJs, urban installations, art projects and performances, workshops, technology and social projects fostering ways of thinking that support environmentally friendly and community-based cooperation.

 

the festival invites recognized performers, scientists, musicians and artists all over the world to Estonia to contemplate and reveal their visions on life and quality of life through their performances in thematic festival events – Music of Life (concert), Performance of Life (audio-visual performance), Science of Life (lecture), Art of Life (exhibition) and so on.
 
The festival is organized with the main partner Tallinn 2011 European Capital of Culture Foundation. The highlights of the events will be world famous Japanese artists KUNIYUKI Takahashi and HIFANA. It will provide the Estonian and Nordic audience the first time experience of the contemporary Japanese electronic music and sound design and disseminate the experience of Japanese artists through workshops aimed at young Estonian musicians and video artists with the aim of releasing a joint musical work compilation. They will establish a working structure of artists exchange between Estonia and Japan, by generating an opportunity for Estonian artists to perform in Japan after the festival with the Japanese artists.

Kuniyuki Takahashi aka KUNIYUKI

Kuniyuki Takahashi aka KUNIYUKI is a sound designer and producer based in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. KUNIYUKI's music is a manifestation of culturally diverse and universal sounds not limited to any particular genre of music, and continues to expand its horizon creating a new style of music, and is highly praised by many internationally recognized producers. KUNIYUKI's works are in preponderant quality constantly creating a new style of music, and is like classics of the 21st century overflowing universal charm, attraction and magic.

HIFANA

Hifana is a Japanese breakbeat musical duo, composed of KEIZOmachine! (Keizo Fukuda) and Juicy (Jun Miyata). The group formed in 1998, in the Tokyo neighbourhood of Kichijôji. Hifana are notable for using a variety of devices and instruments, both in the studio, and during their live performances which they play without pre-recordings, including: turntables, Akai MPC sampler, Roland HandSonic (percussion multi-pad), DJM-909 battle mixer, DJM-800 mixer, and DVJ (DVD/CD) decks which they helped to develop with Pioneer, and a set of drums with timbales, cymbals, woodblocks and cowbells.
