The 12th Istanbul Biennial, organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts is set for 17 September-13 November 2011, under the curatorship of Adriano Pedrosa and Jens Hoffmann. 12th Biennial will advocate for renewed attention to the importance of the exhibition itself and will be significant in its exhibition structure with 5 group exhibitions and 45 solo presentations that are to be settled in the venues that will be carefully constructed by the world known Japanese architect Mr. Ryue Nishizawa. With the architectural intervention and design that will be made by Mr. Ryue Nishizawa, the 12th Istanbul Biennial will be once again deserving the international reputation it has gained through its history.
They believe that the original points of view and distinct discourse of Mr. Ryue Nishizawa with particularly outstanding architectural practice will make a significant contribution to the contemporary art and architecture world. They are exploring each and every possibility to realize the architectural design of Mr. Ryue Nishizawa in the perfect way, in and through which both Mr. Nishizawa and the 12th Istanbul Biennial will be remembered as the striking examples of their genres in the art history of the region and of the world.

 

Artist

Ryue Nishizawa

Ryue Nishizawa, born in 1966, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, is an award-winning Japanese architect based in Tokyo. He is a graduate of Yokohama National University, and is director of Office of Ryue Nishizawa, established in 1997. In 1995, he co-founded the firm SANAA(Sejima and Nishizawa and Associates)with the architect Kazuyo Sejima together they have won several awards, recently the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize and earlier the 'Golden Lion' at the Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2004. SANAA's projects include: The New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York(2007)and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan (2004), and boutiques for Christian Dior and Prada. Sejima designed the 'House in a Plum Grove', Tokyo(2003). Nishizawa has been associate professor at Yokohama University since 2001. From 2005 to 2008 was Visiting Professor at Princeton University.

The Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts has been organizing the International Istanbul Biennial since 1987.
The Biennial aims to create a meeting point in Istanbul in the field of visual arts between artists from diverse cultures and the audience.
