An internationally acclaimed virtuoso of the traditional Japanese transverse harp known as the koto, Michiyo Yagi has devoted much of her career to making music that sounds simultaneously ancient and futuristic. Although Yagi has developed numerous extended techniques and liberally incorporates electronics, she is also committed to preserving the uniquely resonant character of the koto in its most primal form. Unusually for a koto player, Yagi's focus is on her own compositions rather than the standard classical and contemporary repertoire offered by the majority of koto players. Yagi is also the premier improvisor on her instrument and has appeared at many jazz and avant-garde music festivals the world over. She has released over fifteen albums as a leader or co-leader.
