Born in Tokyo in 1979, Kumiko studied Textile Design at Tama Art University, focusing on silk screen printing, and dyeing, including traditional Yuzen, Batik, Stencil, and Tie-Dye techniques. Her costume design journey began after being spotted by theatre producers during a third-year fashion show. She applied her textile skills to costume design, leading to a successful career.
After graduating, Kumiko moved to London, where she studied Costume Design for Performance Art at the London College of Fashion, completing both BA and MA courses. She has worked with artist Lucy Orta, designer Dick Bird, and fashion designer Walid Al Damirji, creating costumes for various productions, including Joseph, The Globe Theatre, Barbican Theatre, Nottinghill Carnival, and Aldeburgh Music Carnival.
