Chiharu Shiota is a Berlin based artist, internationally renowned for her immersive installations. Her inspiration often emerges from a personal experience or emotion which she expands into universal human concerns such as life, death and relationships. She has redefined the concept of memory and consciousness by collecting ordinary objects such as shoes, keys, beds, chairs, letters and dresses, and engulfing them in immense thread structures. She explores this sensation of a presence in the absence with her installations, but also presents intangible emotions in her sculptures, drawings, performance videos, photographs and canvases. She was awarded the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Art Encouragement Prize in Japan again in 2024, after receiving the prize as a new artist in 2008. Shiota has participated in numerous international exhibitions, including multiple European Capital of Culture (ECoC) programs: KULTUR IM FLUSS – Bad Ischl (2024); Valletta 2018 – European Capital of Culture: Constellation Malta; Pafos2017 European Capital of Culture: Open Air Factory; and Lille 2004 European Capital of Culture: Du côté de chez… She has further taken part in major international events such as the Aichi Triennale (2022), Sydney Biennale (2016), Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale (2009), and Yokohama Triennale (2001). In 2015, Shiota was selected to represent Japan at the 56th Venice Biennale. Her work has been exhibited at major international institutions worldwide, including the Red Brick Art Museum, Shenzhen (2025); Grand Palais, Paris (2024); Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka (2024); Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2023); Queensland Art Gallery of Modern Art (QAGoMA), Brisbane (2022); ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medien, Karlsruhe (2021); Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, Wellington (2020); and Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2019).
