Yuka Kawai is a Tokyo-based artist and professor at Tama Art University. Exploring the thoughts and techniques immanent in textile culture, Kawai creates sculptural textiles based on the constructive, tactile characteristics of weaving. Her work has been shown internationally in solo and group exhibitions. She received a grant from the Agency for Cultural Affairs and did postgraduate research at Goldsmiths, University of London. She holds an MFA from the University of Washington, and a BFA and MFA from Tama Art University,Tokyo. She has traveled widely and lectures at such institutes as Aalto University, ENSAD and V&A Museum. She is also working on an international educational project and, from a sustainability perspective, researching textiles utilizing local natural fiber materials and technology.
