Tomo Sakurais work is an attempt to metaphorically visualize the theoretical frameworks of contemporary physics and philosophical spirituality. By intersecting the properties and laws of matter with fundamental cosmological ideas, she suggests pathways toward acceptance and harmony. These themes are built upon real experiences of diversity and conflicting values, referencing concepts of heterogeneity and multiplicity. The structure of her works reflects structuralist and phenomenological perspectives, revealing dichotomies and the coexistence of multiple layers. In her practice, she employs a wide range of materials—organic matter, synthetic resin, ink, glass, clay, sand, wax, foil, fire—resonating with the sensitivity to “mono (things) and the aesthetics of wabi-sabi and imperfection found in Japanese art, while also relating to the plurality of meaning and process emphasized in post-20th-century contemporary art. Furthermore, research into self-made pigments and the incorporation of their production processes have deepened the thematic focus of her works. Through these multilayered approaches, her works function as open cognitive spaces for viewers, resisting singular interpretation. Within the intersection of Japanese aesthetics and contemporary critical thought, the themes of matter and spirit, order and becoming, tradition and innovation are intertwined, creating sites for the generation of new meanings.
